Poisoned chalice?

It’s one of the most coveted jobs in football and tonight Barcelona will announce the lucky man who’s got it.

Luis Enrique might tell his successor that it’s something of a poisoned chalice. The Spaniard leaves with nine trophies in three years but doesn’t get much of the credit for the triumphs. However, he was blamed for the failings.

Pep Guardiola was hailed as a tactical genius by many after his Barcelona side conquered all before them. Yet Enrique replicating the treble in his debut campaign gave detractors ammunition to fire at ‘Fraudiola’.

Last week, Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the club would announce Luis Enrique’s successor on May 29.

They’re set to hold a press conference for 7 pm local time.

New boss

So if the Spanish media are right, Ernesto Valverde will have his work cut out at the Camp Nou.

Valverde has been the favourite for the job for some time and stepped down as Athletic Bilbao last week.

Taking over at Barcelona would be the greatest job of his coaching career by some distance.

He briefly played for Barcelona during his playing days, winning a Copa Del Rey with the club.
