A pair of updates surrounding the backline of La Liga giants Barcelona have surfaced online on Monday evening.

Barcelona handed timely Gerard Pique boost ahead of CL return/Todibo set to link up with Arsenal loanee in France

Pique to face PSG?

The first concerns the fitness of Gerard Pique.

Blaugrana icon Pique has of course not taken to the pitch since last November.

This comes with the veteran stopper having suffered a serious injury during a meeting with Atletico Madrid, which saw him damage both the MCL and ACL in his right knee.

‘Evidence shows that Pique has a grade three sprain of the medial lateral ligament and a partial injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Evolution will determine future availability,’ a statement at the time read.

In turn, though no exact timeframe regarding a return was provided, it was widely reported that Pique would likely not make his comeback to the pitch until April at the earliest.

If the latest word stemming from the Spanish media is to be believed, however, then it is safe to say that the Barca star is ahead of schedule.

As per a report on the part of Cadena Ser, since widely pushed elsewhere, remarkably, Pique is aiming to be fit to feature in his side’s Champions League last-16 first-leg showdown with PSG in two weeks’ time.

The 33-year-old is said to have been back running for several days now, whilst feeling ‘very well’.

Barca themselves, though, have urged their star defender to be cautious, with a return date closer to the end of February being advised, to avoid any potential setback.

Todibo on the move

The 2nd update concerning the backline of Ronald Koeman’s side to have come to the fore online on Monday surrounds Jean-Clair Todibo.

French centre-half Todibo was farmed out on loan to Benfica for the opening half of the campaign, having been deemed surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.

After majorly struggling for game-time in Lisbon, though, it was subsequently confirmed today that Todibo’s time at the Estadio da Luz had been cut short.

The 21-year-old is not due to link up with the Blaugrana’s squad for the remainder of the season, however.

Instead, he has been moved on to OGC Nice, as part of another temporary agreement.

The Ligue 1 outfit will have the option to make Todibo’s arrival permanent in the summer for €8.5 million, plus a further €7 million in variables, with the Frenchman set to form a potentially stout partnership alongside Arsenal loanee and fellow countryman William Saliba at the Allianz Riviera.
