Barcelona open talks with SFF to remove Pedri from the Spain squad

Pedri’s breakout tournament

There is no doubt that Luis Enrique has chosen a very transitional Spanish squad for the European Championships which only just squeezed past Croatia in their last 16 tie.

It required extra time after Luka Modric and company managed to score two late goals to make the score 3-3 at the end of normal time.

However, goals from Alvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal were enough to send La Roja through to face Switzerland.

Barcelona’s Pedri had a nightmare moment where his back pass was miscontrolled by Unai Simon in goal and found its way into a welcoming net.

Despite this mishap, Pedri has been by far one of the standout members of the Spain squad. Still a teenager, Pedri was purchased by Barca for a small fee from Las Palmas and has become integral to Ronald Koeman’s side.

He has been so good at such a young age that he was called up for not just one summer tournament but two.

Barcelona attempt Pedri call-back

Pedri was also called up for the Spanish Olympic squad this summer to travel to Tokyo.

This is quite unprecedented as it would mean the teenager barely getting a break before the new season starts. Were Barca to give him a break he would miss a large portion of the opening weeks of the season.

Therefore, it is unsurprising that reports suggest the Blaugrana are attempting to get the Spanish Federation to reconsider the call-up.

If successful then Pedri will be able to have ample rest and return for Barca’s attempt to claim back their La Liga title having seen both Madrid clubs win the league in the last two seasons.

Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo, Unai Simon, Eric Garcia and Pau Torres were all also part of the double call-up. Garcia, who joined Barca from Manchester City this summer, has had no word said about any calls for him not to go to Tokyo.
