Benzema declared ahead of France’s Euro2020 clash with Germany

Benzema good to go

Karim Benzema gave France a scare after limping off the field in their 3-0 victory over Bulgaria.

The Real Madrid striker, who was recalled to Les Blues after five years in the wilderness following a sex-tape scandal, went down after colliding with a defender in the first half.

He was unable to continue, and received treatment on the bench as his side eventually cruised past the Bulgarians, thanks to two late goals from evergreen striker Olivier Giroud, who replaced him on the pitch.

However, Benzema’s injury was not feared to be too serious and it appears as if he he has returned to training with Didier Deschamps’ side.

France’s tricky tournament

This news will come as a huge boost for the French, who are in a tricky group with Portugal, Germany, and Hungary. Although they remain the tournament favourites, they will need to start performing from the off if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

Their fixture against Germany will therefore be indicative of the relative levels of the two sides, and will surely set the tone for the tournament to come.

Whether Benzema starts the game for the World Cup holders is something only Deschamps will know.

Giroud proved pivotal to France’s 2018 success and his two goals against Bulgaria may well have forced him back into the manager’s mind.

If Benzema is not 100% fit, he may well have to make do with a spot on the bench.
