A brief update on David Alaba’s future has been forthcoming this weekend, with Liverpool having been confirmed as one of a quintet of clubs keen on the wantaway star.

Bayern stint

Austrian stopper Alaba has of course long stood as a key cog in the success of Bundesliga champions Bayern.

The 28-year-old has spent his entire senior career to date on the books of the Bavarians, since making the move to Munich from his home country in 2009.

Alaba possesses a whole host of talents, boasting pace to burn, athleticism, an eye for a pass, superb crossing technique and a hammer of a left foot.

In turn, for some time, the 75-time capped international was widely considered to be the best left-back in world football.

What makes Alaba such a special player, however, is his versatility.

The Austrian, whilst a full-back by trade, is more than capable of lining out in the middle of the park, and, since the emergence of Alphonso Davies at the Allianz Arena, has actually spent the majority of his time at centre-half.

All told, Alaba has racked up well over 350 appearances for Bayern, securing 23 trophies along the way, including 9 Bundesliga titles and a pair of Champions League crowns.

Liverpool keen

As such, it has long come as a source of concern for all associated with the German champions to see Alaba’s deal in Munich continue to wind down.

As things stand, the versatile stopper is due to be become a free agent this summer, having failed to come to an agreement on the terms of a fresh contract.

In turn, any and all clubs interested in Alaba’s signature have been free to open negotiations with his representatives over a pre-contract agreement since the beginning of the month.

And, as outlined above, an insight into the interest of one such outfit has this weekend been forthcoming.

The update comes courtesy of transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who was drawn on Alaba’s situation during an interview with Give Me Sport.

The Italian went on to confirm that among a quintet of clubs keen on the Austrian are Premier League champions Liverpool.

The Reds are said to be ‘trying’ to strike a deal, in a bid to take advantage of rare genuine value on the transfer market.

As things stand, though, it is Real Madrid who remain the clear frontrunners in the race for Alaba’s services:

‘They (Liverpool) are among the five clubs trying for David Alaba but Real Madrid are leading the race so it’s difficult in this moment, but Liverpool is trying and this is (what they mean) when they say ‘we want to do something interesting’ – good opportunities because, in this market, it is so difficult to do as Chelsea did last summer, it is easier to go for good opportunities.’
