De Bruyne Euros in doubt after injury vs Chelsea

De Bruyne injury

Kevin De Bruyne had to be substituted in the Champions League final after a challenge with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Belgian talisman confirmed he had suffered a number of broken bones in the collision with the German defender.

“Hi guys just got back from the hospital. My diagnosis is acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I feel okay now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back,” he wrote on Twitter.

Rudiger later apologised for the incident.

‘I’m really sorry for @DeBruyneKev‘s injury. Of course this was not intentional from me – I’ve already been in touch with Kevin personally and I really wish him a speedy recovery & hope we can see him back on the pitch very soon again,’ he tweeted.

Belgian manager calls for red card on Rudiger

Belgian boss Roberto Martinez felt he should have been sent off for the challenge.

“For me, Rudiger is very, very fortunate,” said Martinez.

“When you look at the replay, there’s no clash of heads. He’s properly leaving the shoulder against Kevin. He seems concussed and we will see the state of that.

“But that leaves a sour taste because Rudiger’s holding his head, it’s almost that he wants to show that he’s hiding something.

“For me, it was excessive force and it was reckless. And it should have been a red card.

“Kevin is not a player that goes down for no reason. You can see the pain and it’s a swollen eye.”

De Bruyne faces race for Euros

The Times reports that the length of time for recovery is around 3 weeks.

An orbital fracture can take three weeks to heal, which would in theory place De Bruyne’s participation in the Euros in doubt, but The Times understands that the Belgium international is determined to play some part in the tournament. One likelihood is that De Bruyne could play with a protective mask.

Belgium’s group contains Denmark, Russia and Finland, of which with or without De Bruyne they are expected to progress from.

It may be that the Man City man will join in during the knockout rounds of the tournament.
