Teams: North Macedonia & Napoli

Position: Central midfielders/ Attacking midfielder.

North Macedonia may the lowest-ranked, least well-known nation competing at Euro 2020, but they do have a few outstanding individuals.

37-year-old centre-forward Goran Pandev, who scored the winner in their play-off final victory in Georgia, is their captain and talisman but he hasn’t been a wunderkind for about two decades.

Napoli midfielder Eljif Elmas fits that profile far more accurately.

He caught the eye playing as a 16-year-old for local side Rabotnički before moving to Fenerbahçe in 2017 and then Napoli two years later.

He’s made 80 appearances in two seasons with I Partenopei, coming off the bench in the 2020 Coppa Italia final victory over Juventus.

Elmas is a versatile player, this season for example he played mainly in central midfield but was often deployed on the left-wing.

Despite only being 21, he boasts 25 international caps, scoring seven times.

This includes a dramatic 85th-minute winner away to Germany in March’s World Cup Qualifier; North Macedonia’s most high-profile victory to date.

Elmas enjoys a somewhat free, attacking role in Igor Angelovski’s team and will be central to the Red Lynxes hopes of amassing points in their first-ever major tournament appearance.
