Ousmane Dembele

Dembele out

France have had their struggles in their group of death scenario dropping points to the weakest team they would be facing, Hungary, in Budapest.

However they now face some issues off the field with Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele suffering a tournament ending issue.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Rennes teenager has suffered a series of problems with his knees throughout his early career and it appears that this has again resurfaced to put an end to his European Championship hopes.

RMC Sport via Get French Football News later clarified it was indeed a knee problem which has ended his tournament.

Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé has quit the France squad for EURO 2020 this morning after it was confirmed that the knee problem that he picked up vs Hungary would keep him out for at least 3 weeks.

Luckily for Deschamps, Dembele is not one of his key starters with a twin forward system of Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe used with Antoine Griezmann playing behind.

Thomas Lemar is available as a possible alternative wide option as is Marcus Thuram.

Deschamps defends Pogba

The Paul Pogba seen playing for France is judged by many to not be the same player when performing for Man United.

However, Didier Deschamps has said he is fully focused on what Pogba is doing for his French side. Although, he did admit he didn’t have the best match in the 1-1 draw with Hungary.

“For me, it’s only the French Pogba that counts,” Deschamps said. “Obviously, everything that I say is going to… I don’t like to say what is happening at club football, be it talking about Solskjaer or any other coach. Players are different, coaches are different.

“What’s important for me is only what he’s doing for the French team and the importance he has on the pitch. He’s a real born leader, even though, yes, maybe today he didn’t have his best performance.”

Pogba will need to be on top of his game to help France through to the final 16 of the competition in the last game against Portugal.
