Frank Lampard reveals how England can beat Italy in the Euro 2020 final

England’s final challenge

England will go up against Italy in the final of the European Championships, with the chance to win a major international trophy for the first time since 1966.

Their opponents, managed by Roberto Mancini, are on an impressive unbeaten streak of 33 games since their last defeat.

The Azzurri were fortunate to go through against Spain, needing a penalty shootout to give them the victory but all the same have looked easily one of the best two sides at the tournament.

When it comes to how England could go about trying to win, a man who has experienced his own injustices with the Three Lions has his own thoughts.

Lampard reveals the way to win

Former England and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has been speaking ahead of the Euro 2020 final, and revealed how he feels England can beat Roberto Mancini and Italy.

Whilst admitting that a tough task lies ahead, Lampard feels that England have the superior players.

“We definitely stand a chance,” said Lampard.

“It’s a tough match with a tough team who have a real spirit and momentum about them, but I don’t think they have players better than us and we’re also in good nick.

Highlighting how Spain had joy with Dani Olmo dropping into a false 9 role, Lampard suggested that Harry Kane could cause Italy problems doing a similar job.

“Spain gave Italy some real problems playing with a false nine,” explained Lampard.

“We’ll play Harry Kane and obviously Harry is very adept at coming into that false nine area among that aggressive Italian midfield.

“They want to jump and press, almost play like a four and then a six in front of them in terms of the wingers and frontmen.

“And if we can play well enough and get through that press, and then try to use our speed and energy against their back line, which is clearly ageing.

“You imagine the speed of a Sterling, a Saka, a Sancho, Mount, Foden, all of our attacking players.

“We can cause them a lot of problems defensively.

“But we have to be careful because of the counter-attacking they do.”

Lampard also pointed towards the fact that, defensively, England will need to be aware of counter attacks if deploying a back 4:

“If we play four at the back, which is what I imagine they will do, we have to be really careful as they have some really good players — Federico Chiesa looks a really good player, doesn’t he?

“They have options who can come off their bench, they have power and strength throughout their team.

“It will be fascinating to watch it.”
