Greenwood and Lingard both out of England squad

Greenwood out of England squad

Manchester United Mason Greenwood is set to miss out on the European Championships this summer after suffering an injury.

His club confirmed that the youngster would not be travelling due to an underlying issue.

“Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from provisional England Euro 2021 squad in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the U21 Euros in March.

“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 20/21 PL + and EL schedule but a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial + Mason will remain at Man Utd to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training”

It was revealed yesterday that Greenwood’s chances of being selected by Gareth Southgate were not looking good regardless of news of an injury.

Lingard to miss out

Arguably even more surprising is the omission of United’s Jesse Lingard.

Lingard spent the second half of the season on loan at West Ham and had a stellar period helping the side achieved Europa League football for next season.

However it seems not enough to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s team according to The Athletic.

With the likes of Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka all possible options, Southgate has made the decision to omit Lingard.

Southgate will name his 26-man squad on Tuesday and it is thought that Lingard will not be included in the final party for this summer’s tournament.

Southgate will have to cut 7 from the provisional 33-man squad.
