The dramatic upturn in offensive production on the part of Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been highlighted online this evening.

Luke Shaw’s remarkable offensive improvement highlighted by pair of stats vs Southampton

Reds rampant

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are of course currently locked in action with the Saints at St. Mary’s.

The Red Devils headed into proceedings desperate for a bounce-back result, after seeing the club’s Premier League title challenge dealt a pair of blows over the course of the last week.

And to say that United, to this point, have since set themselves on their way to exactly that, would be putting it lightly.

A remarkable opening 45 minutes of action was set in motion inside the opening 120 seconds, when a moment of madness on the part of Southampton youngster Alex Jankewitz saw the Swiss midfielder handed his marching orders, for a frankly dreadful challenge on Scott McTominay:

And, from here, it was all United.

The hosts went on to find the net on no less than 4 occasions before the interval, through Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Jan Bednarek (OG) and Edinson Cavani:

Shaw shining

Whilst it was therefore unsurprisingly the red card, and goals, which grabbed the majority of the headlines, though, the standout performer over the course of the opening 45 minutes was in fact one of the Reds’ defenders.

The player in question? Luke Shaw.

English stopper Shaw has of course enjoyed a rebirth to this point in the campaign, stepping up in a major way since Alex Telles’ deadline day arrival back in October.

And though it has been the 25-year-old’s defensive solidity which has generally taken centre stage amid his fine spell of form, it was Shaw’s explosive output going forward which stood out in the first-half this evening.

As revealed by statisticians OptaJoe, the Three Lions international’s haul of two assists versus Southampton (teeing up Wan-Bissaka and Cavani) marked the same number as he had managed in his previous 45 Premier League appearances:

This is not all, though.

Shaw has now carved out 7 ‘big chances’ in the league to this point in the campaign, a tally only bettered amongst defenders by Liverpool standout Andy Robertson:
