Spurs’ new ‘general manager’ Fabio Paratici to ‘oversee’ new head coach selection

Spurs to appoint Paratici

Spurs are on the verge of a brand new signing. Whilst it may not be on-field talent, Fabio Paratici’s arrival may have a huge impact on prospective signings to come.

The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke has said that Paratici’s first job will be on helping appoint a brand new head coach.

The report also claims that not only was Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino targeted, also Bayern’s Hansi Flick and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag were other possible candidates.

In that spirit, having failed to convince Hansi Flick to reject the German national team, and having looked long and hard at Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, Tottenham made an ambitious bid to bring Mauricio Pochettino back from Paris Saint-Germain. He would have loved to return, but the Paris club flatly refused, and that was the end of it.

Ryan Mason took over after Jose Mourinho was sacked and guided the club to a 7th place finish and a place in the UEFA Conference League. Although he couldn’t win them their first trophy since 2008, losing the League Cup final.

Conte’s lack of belief in Spurs

Whilst Paratici will join, leaving Juventus, Conte certainly wont be.

Having been in talks, the move for the former Chelsea league winner broke down.

Pitt-Brooke details that some of the reasons were down to a lack of belief from Conte that the club could compete for trophies.

One suggestion is that Conte did not think the club would be able to generate enough money in the transfer market to fund the signings he believed were needed. Another is that he did not truly believe Tottenham could compete for trophies.

Spurs have had this stigma for some time and after moving to a new stadium, then being hit by the financial effects of the pandemic, it is thought that Spurs require a more long-term project to build them up to where they once looked to be on the verge of big titles.

The potential loss of Harry Kane this summer though is a huge blow to that project however. With the money made from any sale needing to be spent wisely to avoid further decline.
